Description
Hibernating five-spot ladybirds (Coccinella quinquepunctata). Ladybirds hibernate in autumn and winter for 5-6 months, living off fat reserves. To protect against predators, they cluster together on the underside of leaves or twigs. The black spots on this beetle's bright red wing covers serve to warn off predators. Ladybirds are encouraged by gardeners since they prey on aphids. Photographed in the UK.
